Terms of Service
Last updated: 1 May 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Hanasay. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to them. If you don't, please don't use the service.
1. Who you are dealing with
Hanasay is operated by Taha Boudouma, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom. Throughout these terms, “we”, “us”, and “Hanasay” mean Taha Boudouma trading as Hanasay. Contact: hello@hanasay.com.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years old to use Hanasay. By using the service, you confirm you meet that minimum.
3. The service
Hanasay is a voice-first Japanese learning tool. You speak target words and phrases; we send your audio to a third-party speech-recognition provider, score it as correct or incorrect, and schedule reviews using spaced repetition.
Hanasay is in active development. Features may change, break, be removed, or behave inconsistently. We try to avoid breaking things, but we don't promise the service will always be available, perfectly accurate, or free of bugs.
4. Your account
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for anything done from your account. One account per person — please don't share logins.
5. Acceptable use
Don't do the things listed in our Acceptable Use Policy. We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach it.
6. Subscriptions and billing
Hanasay offers two paid plans. Prices are in US dollars and may be converted by your card issuer.
- Monthly — $14.00 per month, billed each month until you cancel.
- Annual — $89.00 per year, with a 7-day free trial. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, you will be charged the full annual price and the subscription will renew each year until you cancel.
Payments and subscription management are handled by Polar. By subscribing, you also agree to Polar's terms. Applicable sales tax or VAT may be added at checkout depending on your location; Polar handles that calculation and remittance.
Cancellation. You can cancel any time from your Polar customer portal (the link is sent to you in the receipt email and is accessible from inside Hanasay). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
Refunds. See our Refund Policy.
Price changes. If we change prices, we'll let you know by email at least 14 days before the change applies to your renewal. You can cancel before the change takes effect.
7. Your content and our content
The Japanese content shown to you in Hanasay (word lists, example sentences, audio prompts) belongs to us or our licensors. You get a personal, non-transferable licence to use it within the service. You don't get to scrape, redistribute, or build a competing product with it.
You retain ownership of anything you generate or speak into Hanasay. For audio you record while using the service, you grant us a limited, worldwide licence to process it through our speech-recognition pipeline for the sole purpose of giving you a result. We do not store your audio and we do not use it to train any model.
8. Disclaimers
Hanasay is provided as is and as available. We don't guarantee that you'll become fluent, that the pronunciation evaluation will always be correct, or that the service will be uninterrupted. The pronunciation evaluator is automated and can produce false positives and false negatives. Hanasay is a study aid, not a substitute for a teacher, qualified instruction, or professional certification.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent allowed by law, our total liability to you for anything connected with the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim. We aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost profits, or lost data. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any other liability that cannot be limited under UK law.
10. Termination
You can stop using Hanasay any time and delete your account by emailing us. We can suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms or use the service in a way that's unsafe, abusive, or illegal.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If a change is material, we'll let you know by email or in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after the change means you accept it.
12. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes will be handled by the courts of England and Wales, except that consumers based elsewhere keep the protections of mandatory local consumer-protection law.
13. Contact
